Traffic leads and short leashes

What is a traffic lead and how does it differ from a standard leash?

A traffic lead is more than just a short leash - it is the reliable solution in situations that require the highest attention and where the dog must be under control at all times.

The versatility of the traffic lead:
Designed to keep the dog close to the handler, leads are particularly indispensable in dog sports, police and military, where precision and control are crucial. But even in everyday situations, traffic leads always come in handy when it comes to guiding the dog close to the handler, such as on busy streets, during encounters with other dogs, or in crowded areas.

What short leads are not suitable for:
Contrary to common belief, traffic leads are not suitable for teaching the dog to "heel." Dogs that have not yet learned to walk calmly beside their owner would constantly be in tension. This constant pressure usually leads to the dog pulling even harder. Therefore, use traffic leads only when your dog already has good leash manners or in "emergencies" where the dog must be under control.

The length of the lead:
Traffic leads and Tabs are designed to keep the dog close to the handler. They are typically 30 cm to 60 cm long to ensure that the dog does not have too much freedom and remains well under control, especially in traffic, tactical work, or dog training situations. Furthermore, the Traffic Lead or Tab should only be long enough so that it does not touch the ground when attached to the collar or harness, this allows you remain the Tab attached to the dog while training.
