When buying a dog leash, several key factors matter. We’ve summarized what counts - so your choice delivers safe control and real usability.
First things first: There’s no such thing as a universal “one-leash-for-everything.” Most owners need more than one leash - especially with large breeds, in sport, or for working dogs. High-quality, purpose-built leashes are essential gear to guide your dog safely.
For strolls in the city or at the park, a 1.2–2 meter leash is usually enough. Longer hikes or jogging call for a 3–5 meter leash. Training (especially for pups or dogs in education) may require a 10-20 meter long line. For stressful or crowded settings and heavy traffic, use a short lead - 20-50 cm - for maximum close control at all times.
Your leash should be durable and easy-care. Common materials include nylon, polyester, rubberized webbing (Grip), Biothane, and leather. Nylon is also characterized by its extreme durability and tear resistance. Furthermore, it is light and easy to maintain. Polyester is strong and hard-wearing. Super Grip leashes are slip-resistant and weather-proof; woven rubber threads ensure great grip even when wet. Biothane feels like leather, is very tough, and simple to clean.
Reliable clips and closures are a must - bolt snaps, safety carabiners, Swedish hooks, or KONG FROG carabiners. Bolt snaps come in different sizes/materials, including stainless steel (ultra-durable, rustproof, keeps working in saltwater). Brass carabiners are stable and resist freezing. Zinc alloy carabiners are light but less corrosion-resistant. Safety carabiners with auto-lock offer extra security. Swedish hooks are robust and quick to clip, but may open accidentally in some cases. The KONG FROG system is unrivaled in strength and reliability.
